This tournament attracted over 250 scouts in the last 4 years and this year it will be the biggest yet. Many teams also enter this tournament hoping to find missing pieces for the upcoming season. Some teams use this as a Junior A tryout where they bring players in to see how they can play against high level competition, others bring players in to see where they fit for the upcoming seasons. Every year this tournament is used for multiple purposes of teams that join the tourney. This year is the 5th year anniversary of the Capstone Invitational. The round-robin tournament has the Wolverines against Fargo Shanley Wednesday Red Lake Falls today (Thursday) and Holy Family on Friday. The Wolverines (5-3) host the 16th Annual WDC Holiday Hockey Tournament beginning on Wednesday. Two more power-play goals pushed the Wolverines to a 5-1 lead as Maas scored 45 seconds into the third period and Justin Wolden added another score 1:11 later as the Wolverines went on to defeat Park Rapids Area 5-2. The Wolverines added to the lead late in the second period on Trevor Ness's goal at 14:28 19, Jascha Pettit got the Wolverines going against the previously undefeated Panthers with his two power-play goals after Park Rapids had opened the game with a 1-0 lead off a Colter Hensel score. The Wolverines finished with 32 shots in the loss. Detroit Lakes had 28 shots on goal during the third-period scoring frenzy. Wolverine netminder Derek Neu took the loss as he was peppered by the relentless Lakers for 59 shots. Jascha Pettit had three goals and an assist. Justin Wolden tallied five points, all on assists. Maas led the way with two goals and four assists. The high-scoring game brought a wealth of points for the Wolverines in the loss. Unfortunately, the Lakers ruined any chance for the Wolverines to pull off the upset when Schiller scored shorthanded at 4:11 for the game-winner to make it 7-6.
The Wolverines got a big break 2:44 into the extra period when Laker Alex Provo was called for interference, setting up a prime power-play opportunity. Pettit's hat trick goal with 2:03 remaining in the game tied it up and gave the Wolverines a shot at ending the bleeding going into overtime. The meltdown started at one minute into the third on Ben Bergquist's goal, followed by goals from Cody Einerson, Tyler Swenson, Kyle Danner, Joe Schiller, Josh O'Neill, giving the Lakers the 6-5 lead. In all, six different Lakers scored in the furious comeback that melted the Wolverines upset chances. In 17 minutes, the Wolverines' big lead disappeared as fast as the snow cover on the ground in the Wadena area as the Lakers' wave after wave of scoring scorched the nets. Christian Berg tallied the other goal to give the Wolverines a seemingly comfortable cushion heading into the final period.
